The Asylum

June 6th, 2009

Last night, Mrs. Gimo brought back a movie from the RedBox. She was so excited because she knew it was a movie I would like to see. And she was right, but for the wrong reasons. The movie? The Day the Earth Stopped NOT starring Keanu Reeves. This gem of a movie is one of many exceedingly low budget attempts to capitalize on a blockbuster movie. The studio in question is The Asylum and they apparently make a lot of bank duping the well-meaning wives of movie geeks the world over. A random sampling of their other movies: Transmorphers, The 18 Year Old Virgin, 100 Million BC, AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, Snakes on a Train…the list goes on.

Click the jump for more on this classy film. So the plot involves TWO aliens (that’s twice as many as The Day the Earth Stood Still, so it should be twice as good…right?) who have come to earth to warn humanity that we’ve become too destructive and blah, blah, blah. They also have 666 robots that, well…do nothing. They fly to earth, stand around and fly back to outerspace. So, the movie starts with the female of the alien couple sauntering through the woods naked and looking provocatively at the camera (please refer to bad movie rule number 1). That scene coupled with the title actually made me think that the missus had accidently brought home a soft-core porno. Instead, it turned out to just be a piece of crap. PS, I fell asleep for about 15 minutes, so I apparently missed the part where the US Army tries to nuke one of the robots but of course it didn’t do anything, oh well. Anyway, as I stated above, this is exactly the kind of movie I love to watch. It’s just awful, and everyone involved has to know that it’s awful. I can’t believe that they could dupe themselves into thinking anything else. And I have to give kudos to Mrs. Gimo for pointing out that John Bender from The Breakfast Club (Judd Nelson) is in this! Good eye, babe, I’m so proud of you! Anyhoo, for your personal edification, the trailer to this turd:
